Digital platforms are creating a world where media companies need to produce and publish at increasing speed, across numerous platforms and to an ever-fragmenting audience. The proliferation of connected and increasingly versatile digital devices such as phones and tablets are creating an increasingly visual world where media, advertisers and service providers need to produce offerings that address the way people interact with these tools.
Getty Images API was launched in February, 2012 to address these changes in our market. It’s essentially a new tool set that enables customers to use our content as part of new businesses that they are building, primarily online, where traditional license models simply do not work. The term “Getty Images API” is an umbrella term for our Application Programming Interface (API) solution. This solution embeds Getty Images content, metadata and search functionality directly inside customers’ publishing tools, products and services, often completing the workflows that are key to our customers’ businesses. The number of ways customers can potentially apply this functionality is as varied as their businesses are.
Getty Images API offers additional opportunities for revenue that can scale up or down based on the customer’s need. In fact, Getty Images API enables revenue to be generated for uses that today are not monetized – such as people simply viewing content (per-view) basis, or through a fee based on a customer’s site traffic or the number of our customer’s subscribers who come in contact with the content while on the customer's site. We’re talking small sums but high volumes with Getty Images API initiatives and while these new models are not intended to, nor will they, replace our current core business models, we expect the Getty Images API models to be applied where traditional models aren't able to penetrate.
This innovation by Getty Images allows us to participate in numerous opportunities in emerging markets and generate completely new, incremental revenue for our business and our contributors. Getty Images API is a key element of the future of the visual content industry. Think of it this way; before Getty Images API, exposure for your content was limited to the traffic visiting our licensing platforms or those of our distributors. Getty Images API is a breakthrough for us because we are now able to leverage new and often very significant traffic on our customer’s platforms as well.
In recent months we've made great progress in introducing Getty Images API to both new and existing customers spanning a number of industries. Nearly 60 customers, including digital media and advertising services, print-on-demand distributors, and mobile and web-based applications, are now using Getty Images API to add value within their products and offerings and improving their overall business using just our wholly owned content.
We’re already generating additional revenue streams for our business that we had no means to monetize effectively before. In turn, Getty Images API customers are benefiting from improved workflows, features and services as a result of having direct access to our content, metadata and technology. You can see some of them here in our new Getty Images API customer presentation. We’re now ready to begin sharing these benefits with contributors. In the coming months we’ll include contributor content in Getty Images API initiatives where the fit is appropriate.
To be very clear: our core business of traditional license models, RF and RM, – continues to be our primary business. These traditional models adequately service the vast majority of our 1.5 million annual customers for tens of millions of assets licensed, and they will continue to do so. But as a dynamic growing business, it is crucial for us to be looking for innovative ways to expand the market in which we operate.
Now that you've seen a few examples in the video of how our customers are using Getty Images API, we hope you’re as excited as we are about the opportunities. We’ll be back in touch very shortly with more information as we announce exciting customer projects that are now in development.
