We ask for a property release because we need verification that the contributor is truly the original creator of the artwork, and that the contributor is allowing the art to be licensed for commercial use by our customers.
Anyone can take a photo of a painting or drawing, but that doesn’t mean that they have permission to license that art. The property release assures us that you have either created the work yourself, or that you own or control the copyright for the original artwork.

Submitting Illustrations: A guide to reference images and property releases for non-digital artwork
In certain instances your illustrations must be accompanied by additional documentation in order to successfully be accepted into our collection. Reference, or source images, and property releases are sometimes necessary in order to protect both our contributors and our customers from a potential claim of copyright infringement.
Reference Images
A reference image is a photo, sketch or artwork on which the illustration you are submitting is directly based. If your illustration was created based on another image, you must attach the original as a reference image.
You must own the copyright to the original reference image. You cannot submit illustrations that are based on images to which you do not own copyright, such as free images from the internet or public domain.
There are 6 Vector/Illustration Techniques which require a reference image:
Silhouettes
Auto-traced vectors
gradient Meshes (non-abstract)
photos filtered to look like illustrations (or used as the basis of an illustration)
Low-Poly (non-abstract)
Pixel/Mosaic Art (non-abstract)
Make sure you submit the original, untouched image that was used as your source material. This means you should not upload another JPG of your finished illustration as a reference image, we need to see the original image on which you based your illustration.
You can find more information on this topic here: Why was my image rejected for needing a reference image?
Property release
When submitting scans of illustrations or artwork that was not created digitally, you must also submit a property release. Non-digital illustrations include any artwork that has been scanned or photographed, such as pen and ink drawings, paintings, watercolors, and engravings.
If a non-digital illustration is submitted without a property release, then it will be rejected with the reason “Illustration Property Release - A property release with a thumbnail of the original image is required.” If you submit a property release along with your non-digital illustration, but the submission is rejected with “Property Release - A property release is required for this image; or the attached property release does not meet our requirements or is illegible”, that just means that there is something incorrectly filled out in the release itself.

Digital illustrations
If you made the image digitally, without any reference images, there is no need to provide any additional documentation with your submission. However, to ensure that you submission is reviewed correctly, we recommend that you select the option "Digital illustration created without reference image" in the Note to the Reviewer drop-down menu at the time of your submission.
You can learn more about the Note to the Reviewer here: A note about the Note to the Reviewer
There are 6 Vector/Illustration Techniques which require a reference image:
photos filtered to look like illustrations (or used as the basis of an illustration)
